In demand as an arranger, performer, and conductor, Jonathan Murphy is currently the Director of Bands at Warren County Middle School in Front Royal, VA. Before relocating back to Virginia, Mr. Murphy completed a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting at the University of Florida where he taught courses in concert band, conducting studio, and worked with and wrote for the Gator Marching and Pep Bands. He has been involved in the performing arts as a teacher, guest director, performer, adjudicator, arranger, program coordinator, and clinician for concert bands, marching bands, and amusement parks throughout the state of Virginia. Prior to starting at UF, he served as the Assistant Director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Athletic Band “The Peppas.” Mr. Murphy has also held the Assistant Director position at JR Tucker High School where he was Director of the marching band, Assistant in concert band, and taught classes in guitar and music technology. In the greater Richmond area of Virginia, Mr. Murphy is also an avid guest clinician and private lessons instructor.
As a tubist, Mr. Murphy has had the opportunity to travel and perform nationally and internationally with his quintet Park Avenue Brass, as well as the American Chamber Winds. In addition to performing, he currently serves as the staff arranger for Kings Dominion where he designs and writes for such shows as the Kings Dominion “Clown Band”, “Rock the Block”, and most recently “Grave Walkers”. Mr. Murphy also has an extensive background in audio engineering and production. He owns and operates a company that specializes in the recording and production of performing arts.
Mr. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Virginia Commonwealth University where he studied conducting with Dr. Terry Austin and Daniel Myssyk, tuba with Dr. Ross Walter, and percussion with Sergeant Major William Messerschmidt of the United States Army Band, and Peter Martin of the Grammy-award-winning group, Third Coast Percussion.
Mr. Murphy’s professional affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, National Association for Music Education (NAfME ), Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA), and Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA).
